A Wild Trip for Spring

The weather is changing, the sun is out, flowers are popping up on every corner, and my Passport is asking to be used. It is saying, throw me in a bag with a flowing dress, some bejeweled sandals, radiant sunglasses, and lets find some far off land, where spices are sold in burlap sacks, the food is hot and the people are beautiful.

The trick for going big with color, prints and patterns is to not be afraid. Find a silhouette you typically gravitate towards, a slim pant, a waist cinching wrap dress, a pencil dress and go bold. Step away from the gray and black and add yellow, oranges, limes, cerulean, ruby.

I love the idea making a splash in a bold and beautiful way, that's as wild as it is sophisticated.

A few weeks ago I shared my staging inspiration boards for a cute little house in DC. The house had been completely redone and needed fabulous furniture and decor to make someone's future house a home.

This is how I learned last night that there was news to know. I'm on Twitter (@CRL26) and this tweet prompted me to visit CNN's website - which was not yet updated.

I continued to get my news from today's leading Twitter journalists (which aren't really journalists at all, at least not in the traditional sense). These are people who are digesting the Internet at a rate that makes keeping up a game and a challenge.

During the Twitter news-cycle I saw a lot of people tweeting about "Where they were when..." They discussed where they were when they first head of 9/11, and now where they are as the President announces that Osama bin Laden had been captured and killed.

To me what is most interesting is how did you learn? In 2011 I was in high school, and I learned via the public address that something was wrong, and then watched on the morning news. Last night, I learned via Twitter.

The low barriers of the Internet make it possible for us all to be journalists and to be on the front lines and embedded within our own daily lives. Just ask @ReallyVirtual who unknowingly live-tweeted the assasination.

The low barriers of the Internet allow for us all to be published authors (hello, this blog!), leaders of movements (the 2008 election) and revolutionaries (Iran, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and so on). The Internet isn't going anywhere, and the technology is accelerated further because of the value that it adds to the potential for democracy and transparency for all people.

I look forward to seeing what makes the news next and when, I already know how...

For as much as Kate loves Will, I've noticed a few other things that have really caught her fancy. Among them, tights, boots, blazers, and a great cocktail dress. Kate has a style that is contemporary and accessible. She knows her shape, colors, and what works best for a life in the limelight.

She favors deep v-necklines, which I suspect will become less deep after the "I do", cinched waists, and fabric details.

On Being a Princess

Tomorrow, Waity Katy will wait no more. Tomorrow, Kate Middleton, the future Catherine, the Something of Somewhere will be a bride, and the most watched bride of all time.

I mentioned in conversation the other day that I sort of feel badly for Kate - yea, we're on a first name basis. It can be tough to be a bride, especially when your every move is scrutinized and then compared to one of the world's most beloved women, your groom's mother.

But, it also got me thinking, how unique is her situation, really? On her wedding day she will become a princess, and on your wedding day so will you. Stay with me here...

You might hate the idea of being a princess, and what is stands for: the patriarchy, and pomp and circumstance.

You might be a beach bride, a ballroom bride, a courtroom bride or a castle bride.

You might get your dress off the rack, at a sample sale, or have it be the most highly speculated gown of the year.

You might share donuts with your spouse, cupcakes, or a multi-tiered traditional English fruitcake (*yikes!).

You might have a very small budget, be a DIY-er, or be employing a royal army of vendors for your wedding day.

It makes no difference. On the day you put on your dress (maybe it's red, "diamond" white, ivory, or somewhere in between) and walk towards your groom, (up the stairs of the courthouse or down the long and storied aisle of Westminster Abbey), you will be the only person anyone looks at, the only person anyone talks about, and the only Princess for your Prince Charming.

Hopefully you're still here, and haven't wandered off. The last time we spoke we were talking matzah, and soups, and brisket (and man, they were delicious!) and then Mark and I were jetting off to LAX for a week of fun and adventure.

We flew into LAX (Los Angeles) and over the course of a week we snaked up Highway 1 to San Francisco. We stopped in 11 little towns, met up with old friends and made new friends and ate delicious food throughout. We also took some time to enjoy the view.

Easy Passover Desserts

Oh, did you forget tonight was Passover? You forgot you were supposed to bring a dessert to your friend's/coworker's/cousin's/mother-in-law's house? Oh you're supposed to bring a dessert and you don't have like an extra 6,000 eggs lying around, and matzah cake meal?

Do not worry. Walk away from the bakery counter. Matzah Toffee to the rescue!

The ingredients are simple, and because its basically sugar, butter and chocolate (and your creativity) it is hard to go wrong. And you can get ready at the same time!

Ingredients:

5 sheets of matzah

1/2 stick of butter

1 cup of brown sugar (light or dark)

1 cup of chocolate chips

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

pinch of salt

Cover a cookie sheet in tin foil, and lay out the matzah.

In a medium size sauce pot, over low heat, melt the butter and then add the brown sugar. While stirring constantly, watch for the sugar to melt into the butter. When it starts to bubble remove from the heat. Off the stove add the vanilla, or other extract that you might like - or none at all, and the salt, and continue to stir.

With a heat-proof spatula spread the toffee mixture on top of the matzah getting as close to all four corners as possible.

Put the entire tray into a warm oven of 250 degrees for 10-15 minutes. (Take a shower).

Out of the oven, sprinkle chocolate chips onto the hot toffee'd matzah and then tent the entire tray with tin foil and let it sit for 15 minutes. When tented the heat will melt the chocolate and you're free to do other things. (Go do your make up).

Come back to the matzah and spread the chocolate with a knife or spatula and then be creative, sprinkle with a little sea salt, some chopped pistachios or almonds, or candied ginger.

Put the tray in the refrigerator for 30 minutes, or longer. (Dry your hair). When you're ready to go, break into candy bar sized pieces.

Enjoy with family and friends - this sweet treat is perfect as a Passover dessert, hosting gift, or a quick snack.

Go Green for Weddings

My standout favorite in the color category was the Oscar de la Renta dress with a sage belt and cotton candy like confection wrapping the model's shoulders. It has since inspired a Green and White Wedding Board with a focus on texture, color and a bit of whimsy. Green tulle calls for whimsy!

I really wanted to incorporate the satin-bow as seen on the bride, and featured it on the flower girl and the flower "embroidered" cake. I wanted lots of texture so I loved the olive tree centerpiece for the escort card table and the freshness of the florals and drink. And of course for a touch of sweetness and whimsy is there anything more whimsical than cotton candy?

Seeing Green, Pink and Blue

This past week was Bridal Market in New York, my invitation was lost in the mail but thanks to the various people I follow on Twitter and Brides.com I had a virtual front row seat. A few trends really stuck out to me, and the first was the presence of color in a sea of white.

In a conversation I had last night I told someone there is no right or wrong way to get married, only your way. These dresses are the visual illustration of that theme. You can wear whatever you want, and now in whatever color. Here are some of my favorites:

For Spring I love the bold, and the slight touches of soft sage green. It is fresh, light and a really lovely take for a bold bride.

Two trends that I loved were the surprising supersized stripes on Carolina Herrera's runway, and the ombre dyed Oscar de la Renta in radiant blue.

In a more classical turn, the runways were filled with swaths of blush, mauve, pinks and lavenders. The beauty of the bridal bouquet and some ballerina style have influenced the wedding gown.

Setting the Stage

Normally I think of home decorating and collecting furniture as sort of a piecemeal process; you pick up great pieces when and where you can. The process is organic as you sort of figure out what works in your space, and what doesn't.

Or, you can do what I did this weekend and stage an entire house in a matter of hours, with the help of our good old friend, the Internet. I had the chance to stage to coordinate the staging (furniture/accessories) of a newly remodeled DC row home.

This was a great exercise in design, but it's also provided some great tips for anyone setting out to make their first home, especially those with a limited budget.

In the bathroom: have fun! The entire concept for both bathrooms came from the towels. Towels (from World Market) are a really affordable way to add personality in a small space. Then, because I am like this, I matched the wastebasket and soap to the towels - that is clearly not mandatory.

Here's a tip: in designing for staging and open houses, or for any high trafficked guest bathroom, skip the soft white floor rug. I went with gray, it will be more durable underfoot.

In the living room I went with the bold choice of a light colored sofa. In theory it is safe for a staging house, or a house without kids or pets (like ours, in real life!), but what you forget about is the times when the furniture needs to be moved by movers, and not with your tender loving care from house to house. No worries, this sofa (also from World Market) is completely slip covered to allow for ease when changing styles, or hiding spills.

In the kitchen allow yourself to make a statement. For me it was these cute little stacked coffee cups (World Market), that inspired the rest of the color palette and semi-retro aesthetic.

I had a few challenges: make it affordable, make it fabulous, and make it livable. I am not an interior designer, but I learned a few tricks along the way, that were worth sharing.

Passover Humor

I've got Passover on the brain; I am menu planning, I am planning to clean, and I am writing/revising a Haggadah (the book that is read during the Passover meal). Least of my worries is what to wear for Passover.

Which is why I got a good laugh when my friend forwarded me this email from Rent the Runway:

Friends, there are few guarantees in life, but of this I can be sure. I will not be wearing the Diane Von Furstenberg Taste of Elegance Dress for my taste of matzah. It's a beauty but you'd probably be better off wearing it to the next J-Date "Matzah Madness" Happy Hour.

Red Hot, Orange Crush

The other day my colleague swung by my desk to show off her new lipstick. It was bold, bright and a very happy shade of orangey-red. I really liked it. And in my excitement, which fed off of her excitement, I asked, "Where did you get it from?" She said, "a little boutique called CVS." Yea for funny girls!

If you look around orange and red are popping up everywhere: the fresh strawberries, the tart citrus, the tulips sprouting in the neighbor's flowerbeds, and the Spring 2011 runways.

For spring there are endless ways to this bright and vibrant hue; it speaks loudly and with confidence and requires an equally glowing smile.

So how to wear red/orange in real life...

Be confident in the shape of what you're wearing, the silhouette will make a huge difference.
Start with something small and work into larger statements. In makeup maybe test nails before lipstick, in fashion shoes before a sheath
Find the right shade for your shade, and find complimenting shades to pair it with
Look to nature for inspiration, this is a color that if you're looking for it you'll find everywhere.

Berry Good Breakfast Muffins

True story, inspired by "If You Give a Moose a Muffin", if you're coming to my house, I am going to make sure that there is coffee. And if there is coffee you'll probably want something to eat. And if you're going to eat something it might as well be a muffin. And if people are going to be eating muffins, I am going to be baking them.

That is the story behind these Berry Good Breakfast Muffins, we had people coming over at 7am (*I know! That is crazy early!) and I thought 7am visits deserve muffins. But, these muffins shouldn't be cloyingly sweet, or filled with butter and chocolate. They should be a healthy breakfast is a small paper cup.

Berry Good Breakfast Muffins Ingredients

adapted from Joy the Baker's Raspberry and Jam Muffins

1 1/4 cups whole wheat flour

1 1/4 cups dry oatmeal

1 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1 cup unsweetened apple sauce

1/2 cup nonfat Greek Yogurt

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 egg

2 tablespoons raspberry jam (I use no sugar added)

1 cup chopped blackberries

In a large bowl add all of the dry ingredients, flour, oats, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon and with fork blend together.

In a separate bowl add all of the wet ingredients, egg, yogurt, apple sauce and sugar. With that same trusty fork blend these ingredients. There is something to be said about a recipe that doesn't require, or isn't made any easier by using an electric blender.

When the wet ingredients are blended all the pieces will be fully incorporated and smooth. Slowly add the wet to the dry and incorporate together and whisk together so everything is one big batter.

I used blackberries because that is what I had on hand. I chopped them up so that the juice would flow throughout each bit and because blackberries are bigger and have a stronger flavor than blueberries (another delicious option). Really any fruit works here.

With each scoop of jam I broke it apart into smaller chunks within the batter and very gently folded it in without turning the batter a pretty shade of pinkish purple.

Set these little breakfast bites into a 375 degree oven for 16 minutes. The batter makes 18 muffins, so you might want to invite people over at 7am to share these with and enjoy!

I'll Meet You at the Bar

I am not a big drinker, but I love a bar. I love a cookie dunking, cheese cutting, drink making, ice cream cone stacking, pie slicing bar. I love it so much that for our wedding I recruited family to make our favorite cookies which were artfully displayed in beautiful glass domes and trays.

The Viennese table of my bat mitzvah youth, and the all-you-can-eat buffet of my worst nightmares have been elevated to a chic level of sophistication and grace. You can blame it on food bloggers, food stylists, but Amy Atlas is the pro who has made it an art.

Gone are over flowing trays of cheddar cheese cubs and sad excuses for French pastries. In their places are authentic foods, comfort foods, real foods in smaller portions and beautifully displayed.

Ice Cream is amazing, but how much sweeter do you think it tastes when this is how it looks? Probably a thousand times sweeter is my guess.

All About the Race

On Saturday night Mark and I went to dinner at Paolo's (spaghetti dinner, you know) and went to bed at around 11:30pm. I was definitely nervous, nervous about waking up on time, nervous about how cold it would be in the morning, nervous if I had trained enough, or in the right way. Nervous!

Sunday morning at 5am came earlier than I anticipated. But, after a night of much interrupted sleep I was feeling a sense of now or never. I made my pre-race breakfast, oatmeal and almond butter, and a banana and drank, and drank, and drank (lots of water).

If you're wondering what to wear if you're running 10 miles and it is 33 degrees outside, you may follow my lead: long leggings (cotton/spandex), a wicking sports bra, a base layer long sleeve t-shirt, a Marmot zip up jacket, and a headband. It is cold at 5am, but around mile 3 it really does start to warm up as evidenced by the trail of jackets, gloves, a shirts on the street.

As I have said, this was my first race. Sometime in the early morning hours as I wandered around the base of the Washington Monument, my nerves dissipated and were replaced with excitement (as well as an urgency to pee - see above about the water). I felt my muscles warm up and relax, and that sense of fear about not being able to do this thing, this race, turned into excitement as a smile spread across my face.

I didn't run the best race, I got a cramp, I had to walk for a portion. But, I finished. I came running into the finish line as my husband and sister watched and cheered me on and finished in just under 2 hours.

As I ran faster towards the finish line, I wasn't thinking anything. I was just running (I know, very Forrest Gump). When I crossed I felt everything. I felt salt on my forehead, the cold chill on sweat soaked clothes, and absolute joy. I wasn't tired. I was proud.

I hope you'll take some time to make a goal, whatever it is, and train towards it. That feeling at the end, it's amazing.

This weekend I am running the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Race. I am clearly not the first person to run this race, and I'll be running it with thousands of other people, but I am excited about this race. And by excited I mean pretty nervous.

I am not a runner. In fact, when I went to the running store two weeks ago to buy new sneakers, I emphatically told the employee, "I am running in the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile, but I'm not a runner or anything". And the truth is, I wasn't a runner. I didn't look forward to running the trails near our apartment in Virginia, and I often stood on the side of the track while Mark ran (and fast).

This past fall, I knew I needed to find a mental and physical challenge to compete with the various other challenges in life. I needed something to focus on, to aspire to and to complete.

I am generally competitive by nature, but the only person I have been competing with has been me. Over the course of the last two months, during my training program, I have gone from dreading the 3 miles I needed to run, to saying now, "Oh, it's just three miles."

Before I ever started running I told myself that if I ran 5 miles my gift to myself would be the Maniac pumps from Brian Atwood, it is no longer about the shoes. It is about knowing that I set a goal, I went after it, and in a few days I will do it. I am not running for time, I am running for me.

It Won't be Cold Forever, Spring Will Come

Say what you will about the traffic, the economy, the politics; Florida is a special kind of place, it is sunny, fresh, embraces rhinestones and diamonds for daytime, has a lot of love, and takes pride in its sunshiney-ness with streets named after flowers, fruits and tropical birds like Flamingo Road and Orange Drive.

As I mentioned I spent the weekend at home visiting my parents. I flew in Friday evening and had dinner with my parents at home. Saturday morning I went for a training run for my upcoming race (it's 3 days away!), and then I spent lunch with my dad's parents for lunch and a baking lesson, recipe coming soon.

I haven't been in 80+ degree weather in quite some time, and I haven't been to the beach since Thanksgiving. It was a good reminder of what is to come. So, my friends in cold locations, please know it won't be cold forever, the rain will stop, you'll be able to put your coats, scarves, and wellies away.

The sun will come out soon, and it will be beautiful.

Lucky Charms

I like stars, horseshoes and rainbows in the marshmallow form, but I love evil eyes, wishbones and clovers in silver, gold and platinum.

What can I say? I have a sweet tooth and like nice things!

With Yoga, Kabbalah, and good fashion superstition sharing the limelight with the ancient and traditional faiths, the way we find luck, good favor, and a little bit of blessings now comes with bling.

Crab Cake Appetizers

"Crab cakes and football, that's what Maryland does!" - Wedding Crashers

To live near Maryland is to know (and love) crabs: steamed, dipped in butter, made into cakes. When I was home for the weekend I made a crab cake appetizers for my parents and grandparents. It was so fun to cook for people who have cooked for me my whole life, and to make something that doesn't show up too often in South Florida. Florida is all about stone crabs, not Maryland crabs.

Crab Cake Appetizer, makes 14

2 containers of 8oz crab meat (I used lump and claw)

1 egg, gently beaten

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

1/8 cup of Panko breadcrumbs

1/2 lemon juiced

1/2 teaspoon Old Bay (this is not exact*)

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

2 shakes of Worcestershire sauce

3 cracks of fresh black pepper

sprinkle of salt

Sauce

2 tablespoons of mayonaisse

1/2 teaspoon Old Bay

1/4 lemon juice

chopped chives

In a medium sized bowl empty the crab and with a gentle hand and wooden spoon mix the different kinds of meat together. You can use all the same kind of meat, but generally one is considerably more expensive than the other, and they have a different flavor, so I combine for more depth.

In the empty crab cup, beat the egg and then add it to the crab. Add the mustard, and a couple of squirts of the Worcestershire sauce, the lemon juice and the Panko.

You're probably noticing that the measurements for these ingredients are not overly specific, that's because we're cooking and not baking, and because flavor and spice is personal. Mark loves Old Bay so I tend to go stronger with that, and I don't care for salt so I tend to go lighter. If you want spicy crab cakes, add more red pepper - it's that simple!

Again with the wooden spoon, very gently incorporate all of the ingredients, being careful to not pulverize the crab. A great crab cake is full of big, pump pieces of meat. I usually take a sniff of the crab mixture to see if it seems balanced, and then maybe add more spices if necessary.

Now, form small balls of the crab mixture is the well of the palm of your hand. These just need to be gently formed, not packing them too tightly. Place all of the uncooked cakes on a plate and cover with plastic to refrigerate for about 30 minutes. Refrigeration lets the crab cakes firm up before they are cooked.

In a large pan over low/medium heat add a touch of butter and get to cooking. Each side takes 3-4 minutes.

When the crab cakes are out of the pan, give them a few moments to cool and mix up the sauce (mayonnaise, lemon juice and Old Bay) and chop up some chives. For an extra kick you can add a dash of Tabasco to the sauce.

Place all of the crab cakes on a platter and give some (or all) a small dollop of sauce and a sprinkle of chives, serve with fresh lemon, oh and Enjoy!

First Signs of Spring in DC

I spent the weekend in Florida with family, and I have lots of recipes and photos to share of what is perenially 85 degrees and sunny (my hometown).

But, before I left I snapped this picture of cherry blossoms along Logan Circle in DC. The arrival of cherry blossoms, a gift from the Japanese, is the highlight of the year because it is a reminder that even though it is still 40 degrees, that spring will come and it will be lovely.

Be silly, take kissy face pictures, talk with your hands more than normal, tell people you're affianced, introduce your "fiancee", get a manicure.

Lovely Lavender Eyes

Yesterday, Hollywood star, human rights activists and beauty legend Elizabeth Taylor passed away. I have to admit, I have only ever seen one of her films, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. However, I think her beauty, her marriages and her grand glamour have become the things of legends - so much so, that people "knew" her without ever really knowing her.

Taylor's most standout beauty feature were her eyes, often called lavender or violet eyes they sparkles and seem to be the centerpieces for all of her beauty photographs. In a very Old Hollywood way, before colored contacts, fake tanning and botox, a young Taylor was lovely with lavender eyes.

Full Moon

This past weekend there was a "Super Moon" - the moon was 17,000 feet closer to Earth than it normally is, so it looked that much larger than normal. Sometimes the moon makes you do crazy things, this is one of those times.

(The picture, though a great study in contrast, does not fairly portray how big the moon really looked.)

On Saturday, we went with friends to Haine's Point, the spot where DC's two rivers meet and it must have been the full moon because we were inspired to try some new food choices, far beyond our normal menu selections.

First stop: Capitol Hill for DC-3, an aviation inspired, boutique hot dog restaurant from the guys that brought Matchbox to DC. Each dog is inspired by a different location, the Cincinnati, West Virginia, or mine the Californian (no hot dog, just falafel and avocado).

To be fair, hot dogs really should be eaten on the spot, either steps away from the grill or still within smelling distance of a street vendor. Our hot dogs had to travel a little bit, so by the time we dug in, the bun had lost some of its bounce and the toppings melded together. I wouldn't recommend these for on the road food, but if I did go back, I would definitely indulge again in their fried pickles; the thick cut pickle coins were battered and fried and delicious.

Post moon viewing we looked at each other and wondered, "So, what's for dessert?" Never mind that between four people, six hot dogs, two orders or fries and a order of pickles had already been devoured, we were on the hunt for something sweet.

Perhaps it was the thrill of the moon, or the allure of sugar and butter, our next stop was Dangerously Delicious Pies in the H Street, NE. Dangerously Delicious is a Baltimore import, and while pie seems homey, this is by all accounts homestyle pie with a bad-ass baker attitude. No gingham, or girly cake plates here, we're talking pies and skulls and cross bones, and rock and roll.

Between the four of us we ordered, and shared the cherry pie (very tart), the mixed berry (perfect sweetness and bite), the chocolate chess and the Baltimore Bomb.

Baltimore Bomb

Baltimore Bomb is evidently a local specialty and has been highlighted on the Food Network's "Best Thing I Ever Ate" as a favorite of the Ace of Cakes, Duff Goldman. The cake is a custard cake with Baltimore's local Berger's cookies "melted" on top. It tastes like melted, ooey, gooey cookie dough - which is to say, pretty out of this world. It is worth sharing with a friend. While it was definitely a treat, I think if we went back that is what I would order again - I can bake a mean pie myself, so I like to try things that I don't have the recipe for and that are, well, the bomb.

So, while normally I'm talking oatmeal, whole wheat flour and root vegetables, this weekend was one to indulge in and we took some time to howl at the moon, and quiet the growl of our stomachs.

The Difference between Boys and Girls

On Sunday I woke up to see the following email exchange between Mark and his friend Nima, and then eventually Mark, Nima, his girlfriend and me.

Here is the difference between boys and girls:

Mark sends a date and a one word question. Nima replies with a one word response. And so now we have plans. Needless to say my commentary in the email took more words than the entire planning process.

This email chain did two things, get me excited for dinner and make me laugh. It has also made me start thinking about where, what we'll do for dinner - but again, that might be difference between boys and girls.

A Fashionable Reality

So, last night brought us the conclusion of Bachelor Brad's search for his forever. Whether or not he found forever is yet to be seen. What we did get to see over the last few weeks was the unique and very different styles of the contestants on the Bachelor.

As I mentioned to Julie last night, these girls are marketing themselves from day 1; they all have an angle, a story, a voice, a look and the wardrobes they assemble for the show are meant to highlight all of that.

Here are the sartorial standouts from a season of "real girls" looking for reality love.

(Texas) Pecan Shortbread Cookies

I watch the Bachelor.

I watched when Trista met Ryan, the formerly chubby comedian, Jen, the football player, the actor's brother, the British guy, Brad, Deanna, Jason - paused after Jason because it was so gross - Ali, and now back to Brad.

I watch with my husband and my sister. It has become something of a Monday tradition; three otherwise normal people completely engrossed in some producers' idea of fantasy dates, and hanging onto every clue giving goo-goo eyed look, and promise of "I'm here for the right reasons".

Mark likes to call it from the very first episode and on more than one season he has been right. Julie and I watch for the subtleties (if you can call them that) in each date.

Tonight is the finale, and tonight Brad will follow his heart back to Texas with one girl as happy as can be, and another girl heartbroken - or at least reality tv broken.

Texas Pecan Shortbread Cookies

*Did you know that the Pecan Tree is the state tree of Texas?

1 stick of butter

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup pecans (ground up in a food processor after 45 seconds)

3/8 cup powdered sugar

1 tsp vanilla

1 tsp cinammon

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup chocolate chips

First I poured the flour into a pan and sort of toasted it a la Dorie Greenspan's Roasted Flour Shortbread cookies. Whole wheat flour tends to have a nutty flavor and fuller texture than traditional flour but the 5-8 minutes of "toasting" on medium heat seemed to really highlight that flavor.

With the flour off the heat add the the salt, cinnamon and processed pecans. Pecans add even more flavor, they're a good source of antioxidants and are low in cholesterol. Hey, when you're making cookies you look for the goodness anywhere you can.

In a medium size bowl cream the butter, powdered sugar and vanilla. When the butter is sweetly yellow and fully incorporated and smooth add the flour mixture.

When the flour and butter are fully blended form the dough into a ball and wrap with plastic and refrigerate for about an hour. Truly, I don't think an hour is necessary - it was late on Sunday night so 40 minutes worked just fine.

With the dough out of the refrigerator is going to be firm and perfect for cookie cutters. Here is a tip, layer the dough between two sheets of parchment paper and first use your hands to massage it flat and then use a roller to make it thin (about 1/4") and uniform. The heat of your hands will warm the dough a bit, the roller on the dough, when it is right from the fridge, will crack it up too much.

I chose hearts, you know, Bachelor finale and all. Set the oven to 300 degrees and bake for about 18 minutes or until the edges start to turn golden brown.

Allow to cool. Then you can dip into chocolate, drizzle with chocolate or eat plain.

I have my favorite in tonight's finale, but I'll tell you what these cookies taste a lot better than a rose and come with a lot less heart ache. Enjoy the show and the cookies (they can both be a guilty pleasure!)

Rainy Day Cravings: PB + J AAF

Welcome to Day 2 of rain in Washington, DC. Here is the thing, when it is raining I feel like blech. I don't want to run, I don't want to think about how my hair is growing (wider/frizzier) by the moment, and I don't want to get wet (and in DC, cold). All I want to do is read, watch, eat.

Some might say this is the perfect weather for grilled cheese and soup. Even that sounds too time consuming... I want salty, crunchy, nutty peanut butter and sweet, fruity jelly.

Please note, if you are ever making a PB + J sandwich, treat yourself right and do the trick my dad taught me: Toast some fresh Challah, egg bread/brioche, and then slather both pieces with peanut butter and then both pieces with jelly. Potato Crust Mushroom and Swiss Quiche

Sometimes it is a Monday night and you realize you have like 12 mushrooms in your refrigerator and two random russet potatoes - both of which were purchased at some point with another recipe in mind. But now you don't care about those recipes.

So what to do? Potato Crust Mushroom and Swiss Quiche probably does the trick. I am a quiche fan - it is easy, filling, and completely customizable.

Potato Crust Mushroom and Swiss Quiche Ingredients

5 eggs

2 egg whites

3/4 cup skim milk

2 large russet potatoes

1 onion

10 - 12 mushrooms

10 stalks skinny asparagus

6 slices Swiss cheese, or shredded Swiss

1 tbsp of grated parmigiana cheese

Olive oil

Salt and Pepper to Taste

I know there are quiche enthusiasts who will say a good quiche has to be with a proper pie crust, and usually that is true. However, in the pursuit of healthy living and delicious eating, this is a fast and quite good alternative.

Slice the potatoes crosswise into 1/4" coins. In a colander drizzle a bit of extra virgin olive oil and season with salt and pepper -this is a tip, place the colander over the pan you'll be baking in to catch the oil. Then neatly layer the potatoes in a to cover the base of the pie pan. I sprinkle a tablespoon of grated parmigiana cheese on to the potatoes and then set in the oven for 25 minutes at 375 degrees.

While the crust is baking chop the onion, mushrooms and asparagus. In a large nonstick pan saute the onions and when they are softened add the mushrooms and then when the mushrooms are just a moment from being down add the asparagus.

While the vegetables and crust cools - this is very important - prepare the egg mixture. I used 2 egg whites and 5 whole eggs and I think you could adjust that to your liking. Whisk egg, milk and salt and pepper and then add the cooled vegetables and cheese.

Bake in the 375 degree oven for 30 minutes - at this time the egg should have a slight bounce but be firm and an inserted knife should come out clean. This is beautiful served with a fresh salad or on it's own because it is filled with delicious and nutritious vegetables - and yes, in our house it is breakfast, lunch or dinner!

Work Out Bright

This weekend was my first six mile run in preparation for the 10 miler in less than a month. Normally I train in my neighborhood or in the gym, but on Saturday Mark joined me for a run around the National Mall.

We were joined by many other runners and it got me thinking about running/fitness attire.

I really do believe you have to feel good to look good and look good to feel good, and that extends to working out as well. To paraphrase our favorite yogi, Eoin Finn, there is a difference between surfing in a 3mm wetsuit and surfing in board shorts, your movement is better with less constriction/bulk.

So in search of work out inspiration we go to the runways. The Spring 2011 runways showed a variety of pieces in a bold variety of neon colors.

You probably know by now that I looove spring/summer. I love warm weather, flip flops, big hair and sunglasses (yes Summer means big hair for me). But, then I stumble a little bit. You see, I am not really, truly a dress girl...

I love looking at dresses; gowns, cocktail dresses and sweet sundresses, but, I don't really own too many. I am a jeans girl. In DC, and frankly in most places during the heat of summer, skinny jeans can be well stifling.

So, here were the rules: fun dresses that could be worn to brunch, a game, dinner, or just out and about, nothing black and nothing over $100.

Fashion tip: when exploring a fashion category or color you're less than confident about, start slow and inexpensive.

Travel Inspiration: Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Inspiration comes from so many places: the people you meet, art, life and yes, the places you go (or dream of going).

One of my favorite trips to date was to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Talk about big sky, fresh air, and slower living, that is Jackson. The downtown is quaint and cute, the food is fresh and real, the air is crisp and everywhere you turn there is a scenic photo waiting to be taken.

In designing this inspiration board and the matching Wyoming wardrobe I looked for colors that were natural the environment and pieces that were wearable and utilitarian (while still being refined and dare I say, cute)!

A Night with Oscar

I will leave the review of the show, the hosts, the banter and the winners to someone else, today we are here to discuss the dresses.

At one point Anne joked that the great thing about this job (hosting - which, let's be honest no one really loves the host) is the dresses she gets to wear and the ability to share the stage with Sandra Bullock and Oprah. Of all of the great dresses (and tuxedo) she wore, and they were great, my favorite was the burgundy Versace gown at the midway point.

Not that I know Anne, but this seemed to be the most natural fit; highlighted her coloring, fit beautifully, and I am sure much to her mother's delight, no fidgetting.

Best black: Camilla Alves in Kaufman Franco. She looks beautiful, sultry, not overly done. I love this style of a dress, it reminds me of Salma Hayek on her wedding day.

Best avante garde: Cate Blanchett. I truly don't think anyone else could have worn this gown with such ease and grace. Her hair, jewelry, and gown are stunning. I love the hints of yellow on this light and airy lilac Givenchy gown.

Best use of structure: Celine Dion. Celine is perfectly tailored and fitted in this structured and sophisticated gown. During the Red Carpet telecasts the flashbulbs were highlighting the shine of the fabric. She looked magnificent.

Best dress for your dream Bat Mitzvah: Hailee Steinfeld. This was so sweet, so age appropriate, so Bat Mitzvah ready.

Worst use of poof: Halle Berry. Halle Berry looked stunning, and I loved this dress until it looked like she was swirled through some tulle and tumbled out of Mood Fabrics onto the Red Carpet.

Best use of sparkle: Mandy Moore. Mandy looks wedding ready, and red carpet ready. I love this dress. It is sweet, demure, and beautiful of her. She looks like a doll.

Best use of white: Michelle Williams. With her platinum pixie cute and darker brows, the retro style Chanel gown was the perfect choice. I thought this was just lovely.

Worse use of white: Nicole Kidman. Pass. I don't like the hip bands, the embroidery, the orange shoes. Pass.

Best use of a Red Carpet Moment, aka my favorite: Gwyneth Paltrow. This gown by Calvin Klein was so modern and chic in the execution and was highlighted beautifully with the Louis Vuitton vintage-y earrings, brooch and rings. Her pin straight hair and the liquid gold of her gown were a vision.

What I Ate This Week

No, no, fear not, this is not like in the tabloids where celebrities share that they ate a (brown) rice cake and half a grapefruit. I am sharing what we ate for dinner because this week we went gluten free.

Why gluten free? That is a good question... In part because there are some murmurs that a gluten free diet can be beneficial to your health and also because by changing up the diet for one week forced me to be more conscientious about what I was eating, and how.

Here is what I ate and also some tips to survive...

Monday: Roasted Carrots + Potatoes and Lean Beef (from Mark's mom) It is always great to be able to start the week with some pre-prepared meals and roasted carrots and potatoes are a low-prep item that allows you to take care of other things while they bake.

Tuesday: Ham + Eggs Omelet and Asparagus. An omelet with a slice of ham folded inside adds a lot of flavor and extra protein when I was making a dinner for one. Quickly blanched asparagus is a healthy and fast way to get some greens.

Wednesday: Quinoa + Collard Greens with Balsamic Grilled Chicken. This is a favorite new way to prepare chicken: skinless breasts, pounded thin and then covered first with a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar and then 1/2 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil. Cooked for 5-6 minutes on each side in a large pan.

Thursday: Curried Coconut Carrot Soup with Mary's Gone Crackers Herb Crackers + Quinoa with Artichoke and Spinach. Quinoa is the fastest way to get that starchy, filling feeling on a gluten free diet and that is why late on a Thursday night I made this again, instead of risotto as originally planned. This soup was a huge, HUGE hit. Recipe is below.

Ingredients: 1 onion, 1 cup of chopped celery (about 4-5 stalks), 1 box of chicken or vegetable stock (4 cups), 1 can of light coconut milk, 1 cup water, 10 large carrots (peeled and chopped), 2 tsps of curry powder, 1/4 tsp tumeric, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, 1/4 cumin, 1/2 tsp cinnamon.

Drizzle a bit of olive oil. Saute onions, celery until softened.

Add the chicken stock and coconut milk and water.

Add the carrots, boil covered until carrots are softened.

Blend. Serve. So simple - beyond, beyond, beyond good!

Friday: Baked Salmon + Polenta + Grilled Eggplant - Success is pending, but this is an old faithful recipe, so I am pretty confident.

What I learned: not being able to grab a piece a bread while I cook, or a handful of cereal, (or cookies!) made me slow down to think about what I was eating, how I was cooking and what I really wanted. I worried it would be difficult, but it was fun and a worthwhile mental exercise and cooking challenge.

Ultimately there was nothing that I made that was outside of my repertoire but there was also no hitting the easy button with a box of pasta, or pizza. Did I miss cookies? Yes, sometimes, but I also loved the fresh oranges, apple slices, grapes and dates that very healthily filled that void.

This was a great challenge and I would be open to trying more food challenges in the future.

Buttoned Up

Two rules I subscribe too: if you can wear shorts, wear them, and it's either legs or bust, but never both. That second rule I actually borrowed from Victoria Beckham - thank you.

In any case for this spring, which I am desperately waiting for, in addition to wide leg and flare jeans and peasant tops, I like the pulled together sophisticated look of a tailored short (no rips, no fading) and a chiffon, silk, sheer button down blouse.

Here are the favorites du jour...

Clean, breathable, polished... Also a sign that I have lived in DC for a long time. Please know that I will keep it real and not wear this ensemble with Tory Burch flats (though, they are great), but probably with a sky high wedge. Thank you, very much!

Paint by Potato

I like to make roasted potatoes, they are super easy for dinner, preserve well for lunch and with just a bit of olive oil and salt and pepper full of flavor and nutrients. My favorite potatoes are ones that I first enjoyed in Hawaii of all places, purple potatoes. They have a dull purplish outer skin and a bright and vibrant violet center.

They also double as a great source of nature-made paint.

Look for these in your produce section on the next grocery run. Food should taste and look good.

Apple Oatmeal Kugel

Over the long and sometimes warm and sometimes very cold weekend I spent a lot of time behind my stove. I really like to cook over the weekends and sometimes you (I) cook too much. I also really don't like to throw things away that taste great, and well, eating the leftovers to get rid of it all doesn't really do anyone any good.

So, as necessity is the mother of all inventions, a new recipe was born. It's not exactly seasonal (apples really makes me think of the fall) but it is definitely comforting.

Apple Oatmeal Kugel*

Ingredients

2 cups cooked oatmeal

1/2 cup whole wheat flour

1/2 - 2 apples chopped

1/4 cup raisins

1 egg

1 tbsp of brown sugar

1/2 tbsp almond butter (negotiable*)

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp turbinado sugar (optional)

Juice from a 1/4 lemon

1/8 cup of slivered almonds

Step 1: Breakfast. If you're like me, when you woke up you thought about making something fun with low cholesterol oatmeal, but you have to have breakfast first. So, you made an abundant amount of oatmeal. By the way cooking oatmeal is always a 2 (water) to 1 (oatmeal) ratio. In this case I wanted a less watery version, so I went 3 cups of water, 2 cups of oatmeal, Mark and I both had a small bowl of oatmeal with toppings and about 2 cups of cooked oatmeal remained. Don't throw out the leftover cooked oatmeal!

Step 2: Oatmeal Toppings. While the water is boiling and the oatmeal is cooking, chop up your favorite kind of apple (mine is Honey Crisp - they are out of this world good). Add the apples and raisins to a pan on medium heat with a smidge of butter (like a 1/4 of 1/4 tbsp). Let the apples and raisins begin to soften and add 1/2 tsp of cinnamon and continue to stir so that the fruit is completely covered. For your breakfast take 1/8 cup of apples and raisins and reserve the rest for later.

Step 2: Dry Ingredients: After you finish your breakfast return to the pot where the oatmeal has now cooled. Add the whole wheat flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Combine all of these ingredients. If the oatmeal is overly sticky - mine was - slowly add 1/8 cup of water at a time until it has a smoother consistency.

Step 3: Wet ingredients. I included 1/2 tablespoon of almond butter in the oatmeal. It added a warmer hint of color, but didn't change the flavor - this is totally up to you to include. For a nutty flavor I'd recommend at least a tablespoon. Add the egg and the brown sugar and continue to incorporate.

Step 4: Back to the apples. The apples and raisin have cooled and should a soft golden color. Bring the pan back to a medium-low heat and add the vanilla and lemon juice. Cook the apples until the juice is absorbed.

Step 5: Bring it all together. Combine the apples and raisins into the oatmeal and then spread the entire mix into a 9x9 baking dish. If so desired, and I am sure it is desired, sprinkle on additional cinnamon, turbinado (raw) sugar, and some almonds. Bake for 45-50 minutes at 350 degrees.

Here is the warning: your kitchen will have the warm, sweet smell of cinnamon, vanilla and apples. You'll know how relatively healthy this little snack is and will have a hard time just eating one bite, but that's okay, because really (not just relatively) this is a pretty healthy way to go.

*So, I am calling this a kugel, because the flavor and consistency most closely reminds me of my Nannys' (grandmas' - they both make it) noodle pudding. There are no noodles, so noodle pudding is the wrong name, and kugel kind of sounds funny, but it's pretty much what it is. The other thing it is, is sweet, but not too sweet, healthy, but not boring, simple but not bland and probably something that will pop up on a holiday table of mine in seasons to come.

In September I featured my favorite looks from the Spring 2011 Fashion Shows, and now that Spring 2011 is almost upon us, it is time to revisit those inspiring looks.

I have taken my stand out favorites from September and searched the Internet to find affordable and wearable version inspired by the real thing.

Marc Jacobs - Spring 2011 was like the most glamorous, 70's inspired, color infused show.

This look is completely wearable, and probably could be assembled with items you already own, but if not...

Carolina Herrera - Spring 2011 was a favorite of mine, and while I don't have the need for an evening gown currently, one can't help but be inspired by the painterly details of this beautiful dress.

This look is admittedly DIY but if done right it's a major wow. And again, I think the larger aesthetic point here is painterly details in a black and white color palette.

Oscar de la Renta - Spring 2011 was for the ladies who lunch set. The important rules to follow here are texture: tweed and silks and colors within the same color family.

With such a ladylike and refined shape and staples, you can really go bold with the color and have fun playing with spring's best and boldest hues.

Ralph Lauren - Spring 2011, this show was Rancher Fabulous if there is such a thing. It is certainly difficult to imagine wearing beaded cocktail dresses on the farm, but somehow Ralph Lauren, as the master of Americana pulls it off.

Day 8: The End of Fashion Week

Yesterday was the end of Fall 2011 Fashion Week and it has been quite a glamorous few days. Yesterday was no different.

Day 8: Malan Breton, Ralph Lauren, Isaac Mizrahi, Son Jung Wan, L'Wren Scott, Calvin Klein Collenction, Adrienne Landau, Joanna Mastroianna, Stephen Burrows, Bill Blass, Elene Cassic, WTB by Nikki Lund & Richie Sambora, Naeem Khan, Lublu, L.A.M.B.

A favorite from yesterday was the beautiful gowns by Naeem Khan, a favorite of First Lady Michelle Obama, Beyonce, the cast of SATC, and many more. His gowns had classic shapes but were elevated by their intricate detailing and beautiful fabrics.

Within Khan's collection, I noticed two rivaling themes an ode to old art-deco glamour and an appreciation for full bodied Bohemia and exotic prints. Those themes were also mirrored in the L.A.M.B. (Bohemia and prints) and Ralph Lauren (art-deco) shows.

Another dress worth highlighting was the beautiful colors in the column gown from Oscar de la Renta, whose show was on Wednesday.

In reviewing eight days of fashion shows and looking ahead to Fall of 2011 a few recurring themes seem to stick out: plunging neckline gowns and their counterpoint of high collar/crew neck dresses, jewel tone shine and rich burnt yellows, reds, oranges and plums, a playful mashup of sportswear with dressier items, complete looks in varying shades of one color in either neutrals or big bold hues, suiting, ladylike dots, sequins and feathers. What an inspiring and exciting season ahead!

In the category of full on color evening wear, I love the subtle shine and fully saturated colors from Alice + Olivia, Carolina Herrera - a longtime favorite, Pamella Roland and Tracy Reese. These looks were full of real lady like glamor and major color.

In reviewing the runways from Day 4 here was some great real bursts of vibrant color and grounded by fall mainstays of muted greys and neutrals. I also found a new love, Lela Rose.

I was never before a follower of Lela Rose, designer of Jenna Bush' bridesmaids' dresses, but that all changed in reviewing her Fall 2011 show. It was everything I love about fall - sophisticated, glamorous, but grounded in comfort. I love the pairing of a slim sweater with a gorgeous printed skirt, a wooly draped cocktail dress, a warm, aubergine evening gown and the plum lips on the models were fabulous, too.

Another favorite fall trend was the pairing of bold colors within the same color family; sort of monotone 2.0. Thakoon and DVF did a beautiful job of letting each color stand alone in its boldness.

For fall traditionalists, one needs to look no further than Tory Burch and Victoria Beckham. I liked Tory Burch's play on the classic Chanel jacket with mixed media fabrics and the way that Beckham's line continues to come into its own, with more grace and ease.

Fall Fashion Week, Day 3, 4, 5, and 6, Oh my!

Mark and I have been out of town and so therefore, away from the conveniences of home and more importantly I have only intermittently been able to keep up with Fashion Week to give you my favorites. Fear not, I am going to bring you up to speed with the best of the best from Days 3, 4, 5 an 6.

Day 3, Saturday, February 12, 2011: Suno, Altuzarra, G-Star Raw, Band of Outsiders, Elise Overland, Gant by Michael Bastian, Vivienne Tam, Alexander Wang, Charlotte Ronson, Erin Fetherston, ADAM, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, Mandy Coon, Araks, United Bamboo, Prabal Gurung, Heart Truth, Kimberly Ovitz

I am digging really, beautifully, well tailored pants. This pair from Prabal Gurung and the beautifully, sort of kissed with embellishment blouse are sophisticated, sexy and wearable.

This doesn't exactly feel fall, but the pieces from Erin Fetherston were so light, ladylike and sweet that I couldn't resist. Love the muted colors and hints of blush in the blouse and the kicky, mod style of the dress.

For the urban warrior in all of us, I really liked these pieces from Charlotte Ronson and G-Star Raw. Fall is more appealing when you know you can be fashionably chic in warm and comforting chunk knits, tailored outerwear and tough girl boots.

Fall 2011 Fashion Week - Day 2

Friday was Day 2 of Fashion Week, probably the day I would have wanted to wear outfit #1 from my packing wishlist. Alas, I am not there, no big deal - still keeping up with each day and sharing my favorites!

Day 2 featured the following designers: Ruffian, Tess Giberson, Perry Ellis, Farah Angsana, Norman Ambrose, Rebecca Taylor, Rebecca Taylor, Rebecca Minkoff, Tommy Hilfiger Men's, Nicole Miller, Joy Cioci, and Cynthia Rowley.

And, so, without further ado, my favorites:

I love this pop of bold color - the entire collection felt very dream wardrobe for a trip to Italy, but this simple dress was an especially a stand out.

Jason Wu's collection started with playful menswear and then went into sublime and beautifully feminine clothing and gowns. These pants and lacy sweatshirt were a really example of completely wearable runway.

So, I think it has been determined for certain that the skinny pant is OVER. And, Nicole Miller illustrated just how glamorous that change can be. She showed bootcut pants, wide leg and these paper bag cinched oversized pants that looks as comfortable as they are fabulous.

Thankful on Friday

It is very cold outside, my legs are sore and my brain is ready for weekend. But before I get too far ahead of myself... I have much to thankful for.

I am grateful for sore legs and muscles that are getting stronger and ready to be used, to let me train for a race that is only 6.5 weeks away
I am grateful that spring actually is only six weeks away - seriously, very thankful for that one.
I am thankful for the chance to cook for the people I love and try new recipes and flavors with abandon
Also thankful when we are able to save a little bit of leftovers for lunch!
I am thankful for the quiet times in an otherwise very busy week.

I hope you have much to be thankful for at the end of this week, and even more than that have a moment to think about it and celebrate it.
